Re. North Shore and Lions Bay Search and Rescue
On Sunday November 5, 2006 at 5 pm a parent’s worst nightmare occurred as our teenage son, a friend, and their dogs became lost while hiking to the Lions from Lions Bay. Their cell phone call started a search that involved teams from Lions Bay, the North Shore, Squamish, Coquitlam, and the Sunshine Coast.
Many people in BC have hockey players as heroes. However, the real heroes are Search and Rescue members who drop everything to go out at night, in heavy rain, hiking hours up steep slopes with heavy packs, at great risk to themselves, to search for people they do not know. These individuals are very professional, extremely dedicated, and obviously care for their fellow human beings.
They unselfishly give up a night’s sleep and a day of work, with no pay, to go out in terrible conditions. These people are true heroes.
We are honoured in our community to have such fine people who make great personal sacrifices to help others in their desperate time of need. They make this world a better place because of their actions.
Our story had the happiest of endings as our son, his friend, and the dogs were rescued the following day at 1:30 pm by these wonderful individuals.
To all the Search and Rescue people, we say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We will never forget what you have done.
