Call Background: On Thursday August 2nd, Coquitlam SAR was activated by Port Moody police to search for two missing special needs women near Sasamat Lake. The first was found that evening, but the second one – Joy Zhang – remained missing.
On Friday August 3rd Coquitlam SAR requested mutual aid from SAR teams on the South Coast to provide manpower for the search effort. From Friday until Sunday, 4 members from North Shore Rescue joined in on the search efforts. This search was conducted during some of the most intense heat of the summer, to the point where searchers had to be medically assessed before being sent back out into the field.
It was a huge relief on Sunday when North Shore Rescue member, Connie DeBoer, came upon Joy during her search assignment. Connie and later her team-mates from Coquitlam and Central Faser Valley SAR assessed Ms. Zhang and found her to be in relatively good health, despite her time in the woods. After a quick extrication back to base, she was sent to hospital as a precaution.
A very happy ending for both women and their families! Great work by all the searchers!
